Thalia’s Umbrella delivers brilliant world premiere of “The Impossibility of NOW”

A new play can make me giddy, especially if I can’t guess where it’s headed and its subject area is “about” the human condition in a new and interesting way. We in Seattle are lucky to see a world premiere, being produced by Thalia’s Umbrella, before it inevitably goes out into the world and probably wins some cool award somewhere. Y York’s The Impossibility of NOW is an unexpected delight, a delicious and magical moment.

The plot is fairly simple. Carl (Terry Edward Moore), a very successful writer, comes home from the hospital. He’s had an accident with severe head trauma and woke up remembering little to nothing about his prior life. Miranda (Betsy Schwartz), his wife, has been coaching him in all the life skills that he’s forgotten and is hoping he’ll get his memory back in time.

Irving Berlin Comes to Life at Seattle Rep!

Oy gevalt! (Holey moley!) So much meshugah schmaltz in this story! (So much crazy chicken-fat!) A schlemiel (a nobody) turns into one of the great American song writers and Hershey Felder tells you all about Israel Beilin growing up to become Irving Berlin.

There is a bit of a rocky start to the biographical one-man show as you get used to Hershey Felder’s delivery. It’s very New York and a bit odd, as sometimes his voice gets elliptical and weirdly low and at first his piano-playing is uneven. But then… But then, a kind of hypnotic charm flows from him and the character deepens and the storytelling and the unbelievably good music of Irving Berlin peeks out and starts working its magic.

Felder is a connoisseur of one-man biographical presentations. He’s created evenings about George Gershwin, Chopin, Beethoven, Leonard Bernstein and is creating one about Claude Debussy for an April, 2019 production. He has toured this evening of Irving Berlin music since 2014.

March Starts City-Wide Shakespeare Fest

You may notice a lot of Shakespeare coming up this month and next month, because theater companies big and small are having a Festival! Shakespeare “straight up” or musically or twisted into individual shapes. It’s all because this town apparently just loves good ol’ Will! And besides that, it’s another month filled with world premieres that no one has ever seen before except for YOU, when you go check them out!

In this Tony-Award-winning favorite, superstar Conrad Birdie arrives in Sweet Apple, Ohio to give a lucky girl "one last kiss" before his induction into the Army. Set in a bygone world of soda fountains, screaming fans and Ed Sullivan, the nostalgic Bye Bye Birdie overflows with comedy, romance, and songs like "Put on a Happy Face," "A Lot of Livin' To Do" and "The Telephone Hour."

Locally (and nationally recognized) playwright Y York debuts a play about what you do when your spouse gets conked on the head and wakes up with a terrifying new personality: optimistic happy person. Miranda and amnesia-stricken husband, Carl, embark on the fractured and funny adventure of starting over. The Impossibility of Now is a lovely, word-drunk romantic comedy that celebrates rediscovering the joy of life through words.

Two wonderful shows are going on at Seattle Children’s Theatre this month and they are very different from each other. The Little Prince is of course based on the well-loved children’s classic and has an interesting choice of casts. The book is written with all male characters except for The Rose, who is very (stereotypically) female. The play casts all women for all the roles except for The Aviator (played charmingly by Lamar Legend). The Prince, himself, is embodied by elfin Khanh Doan, who embodies the offhand naiveté and quizzicalness of the role. The rest of the cast plays multiple roles in wonderful costumes by Yao Chen and includes Dedra Woods, Anne Allgood, and Sydney Andrews.

With gorgeous projections (by L.B. Morse) on a desert set by Carey Wong, this handsome production is directed by new artistic director Courtney Sale. It’s geared toward ages 6 and up. It will help you recall, “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”

“Hamilton’s” OK By Me

There are a lot of different reasons to appreciate or even to love Hamilton: the crazy public scramble for tickets, the hype, the panic, the draw for middle schoolers who don’t even care for musicals who ask to learn its songs, or the thousands of regular people suddenly interested in one of our less well-known founding fathers and a few of his contemporaneous buddies. It’s a phenomenon that has rejuvenated an interest in musical theater so much more deeply into the wider culture than Broadway has been penetrating in recent years.

The production of the show is beloved for being “sung through” in almost entirely Hip Hop and Rap style lyrics, with sides of jazz and Broadway sprinkled over the top. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s longing to change the American Songbook has been a crowning achievement of this score.

Then there are the deliberate choices that upend most of the standard tropes in casting, choosing performers of color for almost every role, including those like Thomas Jefferson and George Washington who were slave owners, pointing out the irony without ever uttering a word in the script.

Locally Grown “Mamma Mia” Is Sweet and Wacky

The musical, Mamma Mia!, is almost too sweet. Certainly it’s a confection and maybe, for some, not their dessert of choice. But for most, it’s a silly, joyous, ridiculous story using boatloads of ABBA tunes that were revamped by the original ABBA writers with a few new lyrics that turn them into songs that fit a musical.

The Story Primer, if you need it:
A 20 year-old woman is getting married on the Greek Island she was raised on by her single mom. She finds Mom’s diary and discovers her missing father might be one of three different men and she invites them to the wedding behind Mom’s back. They arrive and histories are revealed. Will her father walk her down the aisle? Will she say “I do, I do, I do, I do”?

The stage musical has been touring for years, coming into Seattle on a regular basis and usually selling briskly. The 5th Avenue Theatre is the first regional theatre to be granted the rights to produce the musical on local terms. Aside from a couple of imports, the entire cast is local and the designers, directors, and musicians get to put a new stamp of their own on the material.

The Seattle Rep debuted a world premiere (their commission), this week, developed through their new play development process they call The Other Season. Ibsen in Chicago, by David Grimm, feels like an old-style play, set as it is in 1882, but it turns out to be based on a real story: Ibsen’s world premiere of his (especially then) controversial play, Ghosts, was performed in 1882 in…Chicago! In Danish!

Classic “The Gin Game” Casts Classic Couple

A two-hander (two people) about a couple of older people in an old-folks home, The Gin Game opened in 1976 with the classic theatrical couple Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy. I’ll bet these two were great to watch on stage. Now, Village Theatre has pulled off a similar feat by casting Kurt Beattie and Marianne Owen, the classic Seattle theatrical couple, in their production.

Directed by another Seattle treasure, Jeff Steitzer, the production is probably as good as you can imagine a production should be. Beattie and Owen hit all the right emotional notes as the two relatively new home inhabitants get to know each other and don’t much else to do but play gin.

Tale of a Divided Korean Family

If your dad disappeared in your teens and then showed up expecting you to celebrate his 60th birthday, what would you do? What if your family was Korean and obedience to family was baked into your DNA? Family dynamics and reconciliation are on full display with Lloyd Suh’s American Hwangap at West of Lenin, co-produced with SiS Productions.

In many Asian cultures, the 60th birthday is very important. There are 12 animal years in the Asian Zodiac, each with specific social attributes, and after five cycles, you are honored for your long life. Min Suk Chun (Stephen Sumida) lost his job as an engineer in America, after moving with his wife to Texas and birthing three children. He is so demoralized about his future that he believes moving back to Korea would be best and essentially abandons his family.

Now, on the eve of his 60th birthday, he shows up again, and tries to make amends to his wife Mary (Kathey Hseih), and his adult children, David (Moses Kristjanson Yim), Esther (Mara E. Palma) and Ralph (Michael Cerado). Each of them has their own reaction and their own relationship with him and Suh allows them each to unfold for the audience.

New Plays Abound This Month of February

February includes an unexpectedly large number of world premieres! No one has ever seen them before and you can be their first audiences! If you like adventure, then world premieres must be your bag. There is music and politics and explorations of family and personal transition. This fine eclectic mix is sure to give you subjects to think and talk about.

American Hwangap, West of Lenin, 2/1-25/18 (ages 13+)
American Hwangap is a funny story about a weekend in the lives of the whimsically dysfunctional Chuns, a Korean American family living in West Texas in 2005. Min Suk wants to celebrate his hwangap - 60th birthday celebration, even after he abandoned his family and returned to his native South Korea. Lloyd Suh's deftly observant play drives at the heart of what it means to be a family.

You Are Right, If You Think, Theatre9/12, 2/2-25/18 (world premiere)
This adaptation of Pirandello’s 1917 Right You Are, If You Think You Are tells the story of a suspicious family that moves into a city "some time ago, but not too long" and excites the whole neighborhood to investigate their peculiar lives.

Do We Really Want to Go “Camping With Henry and Tom”?

Mark St. Germain’s specialty is writing plays about real events and bringing them to life through infusing his imagination into how these events might have come about. Taproot Theatre really likes his stuff and has done three previous plays of his (the vital Best of Enemies, Freud’s Last Session and Relativity) before the current production of Camping With Henry and Tom.

St. Germain is adept at inventing realistic dialogue with historical figures and even when his plays don’t quite work all the way through, they are generally not boring. Camping is not one of his best plays. It, too, is not exactly boring, especially with the terrific actors employed by Taproot as Thomas Edison (Rob Burgess), Henry Ford (David Pichette) and President Warren Harding (Frank Lawler). Scott Nolte’s usual deft direction brings out the best in these actors as they take on these semi-well-known people.

Top-notch “Frost/Nixon” at Strawshop

One of the most famous quotes of all time is ex-President Nixon's, "when the President does it that means that it's not illegal." That ridiculous statement, which Nixon took back almost immediately, echoes in the attempts of the current administration to shield its occupant.

Frost/Nixon, a play by Peter Morgan which was the basis for the movie of the same name, is being mounted by Strawberry Theatre Workshop with an all-female cast! Stalwart veterans Amy Thone (Nixon) and Alexandra Tavares (Frost) go toe to toe in a fascinating portrayal.

The play brings to the stage a historic moment in television, when David Frost, noted talk show host, and Richard Nixon, ex-President, having resigned in disgrace, sat down together in 1977 for a television interview series retrospectively examining Nixon's presidency. Morgan's play suggests that this seminal interview series might never have happened if financing and advertisers passed on participation.

The Winners of the 2017 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards Are...


The winners of the 2017 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards are announced by the Seattle critics circle, Seattle Theater Writers!

This year, several productions were clear critical favorites, with multiple nominations and multiple wins. Among musicals, 5th Avenue Theatre’s Ragtime was a standout, and in the Large division, Lydia, produced by Strawberry Theatre Workshop, also produced significant winners. In the Small division, the two favorites were Teh Internet Is Serious Business by Washington Ensemble Theatre, with six wins, and Sound Theatre Company’s Hoodoo Love (taking top acting awards in three categories).

This year we also have a Special Recognition for Donald Byrd and Spectrum Dance Theater for their Excellent Production of (IM)Pulse!

WIT at SecondStory Rep - Exquisite and Still Completely Relevant

Margaret Edson hit it out of the park with her first - and only - play: Wit (or W;T). With her background working in a research hospital with AIDS and cancer patients, Edson decided she had something to say about Life and Death. She won a Pulitzer Prize for her drama and continued to become a public school teacher, having focused her early education on dramatic literature. She remains a teacher, today, as far as we know.

Her play introduces Vivian Bearing, Ph.D. in English, an expert in the brilliant and difficult metaphysical sonnets of John Donne. As soon as Bearing (the captivating and intense Eleanor Moseley) begins to speak to the audience, we know she is going to die by the end of the play. It's not a mystery.

It is a satisfying feeling to know that Seattle Repertory Theatre is doing an August Wilson play and that you can depend on them doing Wilson proud! Their current production of Two Trains Running, a co-production with Arena Stage, is exactly that satisfying, soul-comforting excellence that you would hope to experience.

The cast delivers Wilson’s real-life-with-poetry dialogue beautifully, led by director Juliette Carrillo’s impeccable precision. The scenic design by Misha Kachman of the once-vibrant restaurant with the oddly flickering jukebox creates the ambience to sink into. Composer David R. Molina helps the scene changes become added bonus moments instead of dead silence. Period costuming by Ivania Stack effortlessly evokes the 1960s. Lighting by Sherrice Mojgani helps determine the times of day and evening as the slice of life clock runs through their Pittsburgh days.

WET Presents “Straight White Men”

Washington Ensemble Theatre just had something fairly unprecedented happen to them: their first show of 2018 was completely sold out for the entire run as of opening weekend! Straight White Men, by Young Jean Lee, had a couple of extra performances added but with that kind of demand, the only way you might see the production is if you choose to go and get on a wait-list for a performance.

Young Jean Lee is a genre-breaking playwright/performer who has come here on occasion with riveting shows hosted by On the Boards. Her pieces are exactly what On the Boards is famous for around here – like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Perhaps the sales are a reflection of her fame and draw. Perhaps it’s the topic – a hot one of white privilege.

Seattle Theater Writers announces the (7th Annual) 2017 Gypsy Rose Lee Awards!

Members of Seattle’s critics group, Seattle Theater Writers, announce the nominees of excellence in Seattle theatrical productions. This year’s nominee favorites include Ragtime from the 5th Avenue Theatre, Dreamgirls from Village Theatre, Hoodoo Love from Sound Theatre Company, Lydia from Strawberry Theatre Workshop and Teh Internet Is Serious Business by Washington Ensemble Theatre, with multiple nominations each.

Spanning dozens of theater companies and productions, from large and prominent to small and humble, the Gypsy Rose Lee Awards honor the excellence found in as much professional theater as we reviewers can attend in a year. Named in honor of the famed theater entrepreneur and Seattle native, Gypsy Rose Lee, and in a nod to the vast numbers or theater practitioners forced to travel the country to earn their living, the Gypsys seek to acknowledge the excellence of the Seattle theater community.

The winners will be announced January 26, 2018.

Timon of Athens Would be a 1%er Now

We all know that Oprah was born dirt poor and achieved the American Dream and is part of the 1%. Maybe some people like her because she’s rich and she’s generous and she might give them a car….. What if she suddenly ran out of money and could no longer be generous and it means you will definitely not get the car? Would you dislike her then?

Besides the “born poor” part of above, that is the situation that Shakespeare puts Timon (Tie-mun) in. Seattle Shakespeare Company is presenting Timon of Athens.

Timon thinks that generosity means to give and not to receive. I think a lot of us would agree in general with that sentiment, thinking that to turn generosity into a transaction – I give and then I get – would negate the generous nature of the gift. Timon thinks that by doing this giving, he is cementing his friendships. Then he finds out he’s spent himself into penury and everything is lost.

What Was the Best Theater of 2017?

It’s that time for the annual recounting of theater in the Seattle area. 2017 was a pretty great year for musicals. The 5th Avenue Theatre started off the year with a rousing version of Pajama Game with the by-now taken-for-granted wonderful local cast and then bookended the year with a warm, sweet Holiday Inn with another terrific local cast augmented by special guest Lorna Luft. They also provided a moving, historic and excellent production of Ragtime.

We sometimes need a reminder of just how strong our pool of musical performers is. Seattle has become a hub for new musical development and continues to strengthen as a “try out” venue for musicals heading for New York City. That brings more top talent to town to stay.

Village Theatre strengthened its already-strong new musical program by hiring Brandon Ivie to formalize his already created bi-coastal lifestyle and backing their new Beta Program (debuting this week with the next trio of developmental musicals). Their season provided my pick for Best Musical production of 2017: Dreamgirls! It was said to be on Steve Tomkins “bucket list” before he transitions from Village Artist Director and our fair community now has enough top African American talent that they can blow our socks off in productions such as these. Their vigorous productions of Newsies and Into the Woods were also a lot of fun.
